かしこいおとこ
The Clever Man
これは むかしの はなしです。
This is an old story.
ひとりの かねもちは ほかのまちへ たび を しに いきたいとおもっていました。
A rich man wanted to make a journey to another town.
かれは ビジネスマンです。
He was a businessman.
かれは うるものを もちたいとおもいました。
He wanted to take things to sell.
また ものを かうために きんを もちたいとおもいました。
He also wanted to take gold to buy things with.
かれは いっしょに じゅうにんのおとこたち を つれていくことに きめました。
He decided to take ten men with him.
かれらは うるもの や きん や りょこうちゅうにたべる しょくりょう を はこぶつもりでした。
They would carry the things to sell and the gold, and also food to eat on the journey.
かれは しんせつな ひとでした。
He was a kind man.
ひとりの おとこにいいました。
He said to one of his men.
「あなたは いちばん ちいさくて ほそくて よわいです。
“ You are the smallest, the thinnest and the weakest of all my men.
だから おもい にもつを はこぶことが できない。
You can not carry a heavy load.
いちばん かるいのを えらばなければならない。
You must choose the lightest load to carry.
」と。(said that)
そのおとこ は かねもちに かんしゃしました。
The man thanked the rich man.
かれは いちばん おおきい にもつ を さしました。
He pointed to the biggest load.
これは りょこうちゅうに たべる こめでした。
This was rice to eat on the journey.
かねもちは いいました。
The rich man said,
「あなたは ばかですよ。
You are foolish.
これは いちばん おおきくて おもい にもつですよ
This is the biggest and heaviest load.
」と。(said that)
しかし、そのおとこ は ようきに にもつを もちあげて たび を はじめました。
But the man lifted up the load cheerfully and the journey began.
かれらは ４じかん あるきました。
They walked for four hours.
それから かれらは ちょっと やすみました。
Then they stopped for a rest.
みんなで こめを いちぶ たべました。
They all ate some of the rice.
おとこが はこぶ こめは すくなくなりました。
Then there was less rice for the man to carry.
まいにち かれらは おおくの こめ を たべて、はこぶ こめは すくなくなりまし た。
Every day they ate more rice and there was less rice to carry.
おとこのにもつは まいにち どんどん ちいさくなって かるくなりました。
The man’s load grew smaller and lighter every day.
たびのおわりには、そのかしこいおとこは、なにも はこぶものがありませんでした。
At the end of the journey, the clever man had nothing to carry.
